Are you zipping around town on a new e-bike? These electronic bicycles are becoming increasingly popular, especially among teenagers. But unlike traditional bikes, e-bikes raise a crucial question: are they covered by your existing home and contents insurance?.

The Rise of E-bikes in NSW
In NSW, e-bikes, both electrically powered and pedal-assisted, can be ridden on public roads with minimal restrictions. No license or registration is required, making them accessible to riders as young as 14. While convenient and eco-friendly, e-bikes also present new safety concerns such as Lithium-ion battery overheating and limited helmet use.
These factors contribute to a rise in e-bike accidents and fatalities. Between 2020 and 2023, there were 124 crashes resulting in 3 deaths. Whilst the Australian Government oversees the regulation of e-bikes generally, their relative novelty has limited the availability of data regarding their overall safety and usage patterns.
E-bikes and Insurance Coverage
Unlike cars with mandatory Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance, e-bikes lack similar coverage due to relaxed registration rules. However, some home and contents policies such as AAMI Insurance and Suncorp Insurance offer optional add-on coverage for e-bikes, categorised as "personal transportation vehicles."
These policies typically cover e-bikes as specified items, insuring them for accidental loss or damage based on make, model, and replacement cost. Coverage applies whether the e-bike is at home or not.
Specialised E-bike Insurance
For more comprehensive protection, consider dedicated e-bike insurance providers like Sundays Insurance or Oz Bike Insurance.
These insurers offer features like overseas travel coverage, damage in transit coverage, accessory coverage and lower premiums or flexible payment plans
